DrummerThe main goal of my approach is to help my students play as quickly as possible. The rationale behind this is to keep the ‘fun’ in the learning process at all times.
As you may know, learning anything is built upon individual elements of a solid, core foundation, and then putting it all together to get the end results. Learning the drums is no different. It’s about various techniques, rudiments, fills, coordination….and then turning it into a fluid feel and swing. With that in mind, it’s essential in the learning process to bring it all together in each lesson. This allows my students to see and feel exactly why the individual pieces are so important. We’ll do this by putting it into action and playing out the lesson in an actual real-world example. In many cases, we’ll even accompany a particular song so the student gets a firm feel of how to apply their skills to the overall drum set as part of a band! I’m often asked what age range do I specialize in for private drum lessons. Although age isn’t a factor, the typically age range of my students are between 12 and 16---the formidable years. The balance of my students are late teens to late twenties in their quest to go from good-to-great.
Lessons are one hour at my home studio in Thousand Oaks, CA. Although each student is different in their needs, I have found that one hour is ideal. What I find to be the best one-hour drum lesson structure for students consist of Rudiments (the foundation of drumming where we’ll break down every part of the stroke so the motion becomes fluid and effortless), Technical Exercises (call it a workout using books such as Stick Control, Master Studies and a series by Gary Chaffee, we are able to increase control, speed and endurance) and Live Playing on the Drum Set (learning grooves, fills and general set technique needed in Rock, Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Latin and other styles). Feel free to email me at the link below if you have any additional questions or would like to set up an initial drum lesson. Stephan Longo |
